68-year-old woman hailed as grand champion in Sing Along ni Pulong Season 5 Grand Finals

DAVAO CITY – 68–year–old Lorna Querol bested 17 other contestants from three districts here in the adult category of the “Sing Along ni Pulong” Season 5 Grand Finals at Rizal Park on San Pedro Street on December 20, Wednesday evening.

Querol, a Piapi Boulevard Barangay 21–C resident, said in an interview that the song entitled “This Is My Life by Shirley Bassey” was her favorite music piece to sing in karaoke. She added that her grandchildren suggested singing it in the Grand Finals.

“Akong mga apo nag encourage sa ako nga muapil aning Sing Along ni Pulong. Wala ko nag expect makadaog kay ang akoa lingaw-lingaw nalang gane (My grandchildren encouraged me to join the competition. I didn’t expect to win because it was just for fun),” Querol said.

Querol said she joined a few amateur singing contests when she was young until she decided to stop, focus on her studies, and earn a living. She added that this is her first time joining a singing competition through the Sing Along ni Pulong.

The adult category grand champion, who bagged P30,000, regarded her achievement as a shared success not only for her grandchildren and family but also for all the senior citizens of Davao City. She said that senior citizens can still shine anytime with their talents.

“Dako kaayo akong kalipay. Salamat, Congressman Pulong (Paolo Z. Duterte), sa pagmugna sa Sing Along ni Pulong. Daghan nami na hatagan oportonidad (I am very happy. Thank you, Congressman Pulong, for creating the Sing Along ni Pulong. Many of us are given opportunity),” she said.

First Congressional District Office’s chief of staff Wilfredo Villarica, among the five judges, said the winners were chosen based on the criteria for judging, with 50 points for voice quality, style and performance 30 points, and overall impact 20 points, and accumulated points from the judges.

Bagging first runner-up in the adult category was Gilda Joy Togonon-Del Rosario. Shirlyn Hida got the second runner-up title. In the young category, Tiffany Vistal won the grand prize. Stephanie Claire Nique was the first runner-up, and Jeric Kevin Ramirez was the second runner-up.

First District Representative Paolo Duterte’s sons, Barangay Buhangin Proper leader Omar Vincent Duterte and Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II, who attended the event and handed the plaques and cash prize to the winners, congratulated the latter and all the participants of the Sing Along ni Pulong.

Rep. Duterte, in a recorded video message, expressed his profound gratitude to everyone who joined the Sing Along ni Pulong and continuously supported the program. The lawmaker wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

As Rigo wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, he also wishes everyone good health. He assured that he and Rep. Duterte’s office will always be at service for all the Davaoeños.

Omar also emphasized that the Yuletide season is a time to give back to one’s family and be true to oneself after a year of hard work and perseverance. He also thanked everyone who supported the Sing Along ni Pulong and continuously supported the Duterte family.

The Sing Along ni Pulong, one of the official events in this year's Pasko Fiesta sa Davai, is a singing competition that originated in Davao City by Rep. Duterte, a former vice mayor of the city, in 2012 through the Pulong Pulong ni Pulong program. The lawmaker aims to back singers at the grassroots level and help them get discovered with talent.

The young and adult category winners will receive P30,000 for the grand champion, P20,000 for the first runner-up, P10,000 for the second runner-up, and P5,000 consolation prize for the rest of the contenders. The spectators were also delighted to receive a raffle entry for the sacks of rice and grocery items during the event.
