Paolo Duterte Opposes Charter Change Initiative and Criticizes Davao Budget Cuts
Philippine Representative Paolo Duterte of Davao City, in an unambiguous stand, has vociferously voiced his disapproval of the People’s Initiative (PI) for Charter Change (Cha-cha), an initiative intended to modify the economic clauses of the 1987 Constitution. Duterte blasted the initiative as a ploy by some individuals to cling to power, rather than a sincere manifestation of the populace’s will.
Duterte underscored that the House of Representatives had slashed a substantial P2 billion from the proposed allocations for Davao in the National Expenditure Program (NEP). This move, he said, leaves only a meager P500 million for the people of Davao. He accused his fellow congressmen of deliberately depriving his district of essential projects and went so far as to allege that senators were similarly instructed to exclude his district’s projects.
