A new bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives that would provide a 50% discount on remittance fees for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The bill, called House Bill 4469, was co-authored by Representative Paolo Duterte, Benguet Rep. Eric Yap, and ACT-CIS Partylist Reps. Jeffrey Soriano and Edvic Yap.

“The billions of dollars in remittances sent home by our OFWs, our modern-day heroes, have always been one of the country’s major economic drivers. The money they send home helped the country ride out the economic shock triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is important that we protect their hard-earned earnings,” said Duterte in a statement.

Duterte said passing the measure would complement the OFW-friendly legacy of his father, former President Rodrigo Duterte who signed the law establishing the Overseas Filipino Bank (OFBank)– the first branchless and digital-only bank in the country exclusively catering to the financial needs of Filipinos based abroad.

Embodied in House Bill (HB) No.4469, the measure also aims to safeguard from exorbitant charges OFWs’ hard-earned money, which they send back home to their families.

MANILA, Philippines — Administration lawmakers are calling on the national and local governments to regulate the grant of licenses to motorcycles for hire.

Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte and Benguet Rep. Eric Yap co-authored House Bill 4470, which seeks to regulate the operation of motorcycle taxis, including habal-habal rides.

Duterte and Yap urged their colleagues to support the bill.

Duterte stressed that motorcycle ride-sharing has been regarded as one of the most popular modes of informal transportation especially during the onset of the coronavirus disease pandemic two years ago.

Duterte said newly appointed acting PhilHealth president and CEO Emmanuel Ledesma can start by allowing the use of online payments of premiums to make it more convenient to members, especially to those voluntarily paying.
